BOARD MEETING
- Safety at Passive Grade Crossings
The following animations were presented at the Board meeting on July 21, 1998, and require QuickTime or Windows Media Player for display.
Animation #1 (1.41M)
NTSB computer simulation illustrating how an approaching train
appears to a motorist stopped at a grade crossing. Note that the
farther away the train, the more slowly it appears to be moving. The train
is moving at 40 mph.
Animation #2 (1.5
M)
NTSB computer simulation illustrating how an approaching train
appears to a motorist who is approaching a grade crossing. Note
that although both vehicles are moving, the image of the train stays in
the same part of the motorist's visual field, and the only cue the driver
has that the train is moving is the apparent growth in the size of the
train's image. The farther away the train, the more slowly it appears to
be moving. Both the train and the highway vehicle are moving at 40 mph.
