Research Project: Decision Support Systems for C Management Across the U.S. Corn Belt Using Nasa Remote Sensing Data Products

Location: Hydrology and Remote Sensing Laboratory

Project Number: 1265-13610-027-42
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Feb 08, 2005
End Date: Sep 30, 2009

Objective:
a.) Evaluate use of biogeochemical models for mappling baseline soil carbon sequestration and optimizing soil and crop management practices to enhance long term soil carbon sequestration. b.) Utilize remotely sensed data and products from NASA for developing above ground vegetation parameters, crop residue and cultivation practices over regional scales. c.) Develop a Decision Support System (DSS) for carbon accounting to define a standardize scheme for a reliable, cost-effective routine method for changes in soil carbon.

Approach:
a. Development of data base of soil classification (STATSGO), historic climatic data, crop statistics, soil carbon experimental data and MODIS imagery for the 9 state area. b. Classification of crop and Landuse in the study region. c. Soil carbon sequestration model validation and development of a DSS. d. Model application and development of web-based DSS for users. e. Accuracy assessment and implementation for users.
