Series Note

Each bibliography in the Current Bibliographies in Medicine (CBM) series covers a distinct subject area of biomedicine and is intended to fulfill a current awareness function. Citations are usually derived from searching a variety of online databases. NLM databases utilized include MEDLINE®, AVLINE®, BIOETHICSLINE®, CANCERLIT®, CATLINE®, HEALTHSTARtm, POPLINEtm, and TOXLINE®. The only criterion for the inclusion of a particular published work is its relevance to the topic being presented; the format, ownership, or location of the material is not considered.

Other publications in the Current Bibliographies in Medicine series are available at no cost to anyone with Internet access through the Library's World Wide Web site at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/resources.html.

PUBMEDTM, INTERNET GRATEFUL MED®, and GRATEFUL MED®

To make online searching easier and more efficient, the Library offers three user-friendly interfaces to its databases. Both PUBMED and INTERNET GRATEFUL MED are available from the World Wide Web. The user with Internet access need only point a compatible Web browser (Netscape Navigator is strongly recommended) to the NLM Web site http://www.nlm.nih.gov/nlmhome.html. No other software at the user end is required. Searching through either PUBMED or INTERNET GRATEFUL MED is free-of-charge. PUBMED differs from INTERNET GRATEFUL MED in that it offers linkages to publishers' sites for full-text journals.

For those users without Internet access, the Library has GRATEFUL MED, microcomputer-based software that provides a user-friendly interface to most NLM databases. This software was specifically developed for health professionals and features multiple choice menus and "fill in the blank" screens for easy search preparation. GRATEFUL MED runs on an IBM PC (or IBM-compatible) with DOS 2.0 or Windows or on a Macintosh, and requires a Hayes (or Hayes-compatible) modem. It may be purchased from the National Technical Information Service in Springfield, Virginia (800-423-9255), for $29.95 plus shipping. Request PB96-501812 (Windows), PB92-10455 (DOS), or PB93-502433 (Macintosh).

Introduction

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE ASSESSMENT BY HEALTH CARE PRACTITIONERS

Domestic violence, a public health menace, is more prevalent than is commonly believed in today's society. It can take the form of sexual abuse, physical abuse, mental abuse, and/or neglect. The number of cases could be dramatically reduced with improved awareness and coordination by health care providers, social workers, educators, and legal professionals. Recent incidents, their details portrayed in high-profile legal cases by the mass media, have served to heighten the public's awareness of this cycle of abuse that has become an integral part of our society. Awareness is growing but it is still an undereported, yet ever increasing problem for women.

The reluctance of health care professionals to facilitate disclosure of domestic violence incidences with their patients, and vice-versa, is a contributing factor to the failure to recognize and assess the problem. Partner violence is a common source of injury for women but physicians, nurses, other health care providers, and their patients rarely discuss the problem. In other instances of domestic violence cases, when abuse is suspected, admission may be difficult to elicit from the patient because of embarrassment or fear of reprisal. Children especially may have a difficult time verbally conveying their horrific experiences.

Health care professionals' awareness, assessment, and treatment of domestic violence are essential. Ethically bound to maintain the health of their patients, physicians and nurses need to know the appropriate and varied methods for interviewing suspected victims of domestic violence, looking for various signs of mental and physical trauma. While often anxiety-provoking, the physical examination can be a positive patient experience and can provide reassurance, education, and case finding. Identification of the abuse is the first step for most victims as they begin the often lengthy ordeal of rehabilitation.

The amount of literature produced on domestic violence is daunting. Therefore, this bibliography focuses on one portion of this broad issue: the aspect of assessing suspected cases of domestic violence by health care professionals, providers, and practitioners.

Included in this bibliography are journal articles, monographs (books and proceedings of conferences) and audiovisuals from January 1990 through February 1997. All items are in English and focus on cases in the United States. Dissertations have been excluded. The bibliography has been broken down by subject as follows: child abuse; elder abuse; violence against women (including spouse abuse); and general domestic violence, where one of the previous subjects was not specifically mentioned. Journal articles, monographs, and audiovisuals are separated.

The bibliography ends with a list of organizations, associations, and institutes that may be contacted for more information on or assistance with domestic violence issues.

Example:
Fisher JD, Fisher WA. Changing AIDS-risk behavior. Psychol Bull 1992 May;111(3):455-74.

Order, with separating punctuation:
Authors. Article Title. Abbreviated Journal Title Date;Volume(Issue):Pages.

Monograph:

Example:
McCoy CB, Inciardi JA. Sex, drugs & the continuing spread of AIDS. Los Angeles: Roxbury Publishing Co.; 1995. 181 p.
