The BLM manages nearly one-eighth of all land within the United States--261 million surface acres--and one-fifth of the land in the Intermountain West. The Bureau, which has a budget of about $1.8 billion and a permanent workforce of about 9,000 employees, also administers on-shore minerals underlying most other Federal lands--a total of about 700 million acres of minerals throughout the nation. Most of this public land is located in 12 Western States including Alaska, and includes some of the most ecologically and culturally diverse and scientifically important lands in Federal ownership. The BLM has a twofold mission--management of land-based uses and conservation of resources.

The Bureau aims to provide opportunities for every individual to perform to his or her fullest potential, at all levels of the organization, while contributing to excellence in achieving the Bureau’s mission. We seek to create a work environment that values all individuals for their perspectives and to promote a diverse workforce where individuals are respected and appreciated.

Today there are more than 10,000 BLM employees and 20,000 BLM volunteers overseeing every aspect of the agency’s day-to-day operations. As a member of the BLM team, you will enjoy all the advantages provided under the Federal Civil Service. Employees start at salaries commensurate with those in private industry, and career benefits match those of most employers. As your skills develop, so will your chances for advancement. Promotions are competitive and based on experience and performance.

Every mission ever undertaken by the BLM began with just one person – one person committed to being a part of a team to get the job done. If you are that kind of person – a team player who wants to roll up your sleeves and go the extra mile, look no further than the Bureau of Land Management.
