Field-Based Analytical Methods for Explosive Compounds
Sponsored by: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. EPA, Technology Innovation Office
Original Time/Date of Presentation: August 28, 2001, 11:30 AM - 2:00 PM, EDT (15:30-18:00 GMT)
Presentation Overview: This seminar will discuss field-based analytical methods for explosives residues in soil and water matrices. The presentation will include a discussion of the physical and chemical properties of secondary explosives that makes analytical determination of these compounds somewhat challenging, a short review of accepted fixed-laboratory-based methods for this suite of compounds, and the quantitative requirements for various compounds within this group. Sampling considerations for water and soil matrices will be considered, with particular emphasis on the problem of obtaining representative soil samples in areas of extreme spatial heterogeneity in analyte distribution. Finally there will be a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of the most commonly employed on-site methods for these compounds, as well as several methods that are currently under development.
