U.S. Industrial Outlook

Industrial Outlook Tables

In March 1995, the U.S. Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA) published The U.S. Global Trade Outlook, 1995-2000: Toward the 21st Century, a report on America's place in the global economy highlighting export growth and trade trends in key countries and sectors. This publication succeeded the U.S. Industrial Outlook, which the Commerce Department had published for many years.

After a review by ITA of the U.S. Industrial Outlook's objectives and resource requirements, it was decided that a revamped Outlook would better support the trade development mission of the Department. The changing world economy has become an increasingly important factor in the economic prospects of U.S. industries, and ITA is particularly well suited to assessing the effect of global developments on opportunities for U.S. businesses.

To provide researchers with updates of the historical statistics contained in the U.S. Industrial Outlook, a set of Industry Trends tables was published in the Statistical Abstract of the United States, 1995. These tables track the same industry groupings as appeared in the U.S. Industrial Outlook's Trends and Forecasts Tables.

Industrial Outlook Tables

(From The Statistical Abstract of the United States, 1995, Section 31)

This new section presents statistics for major manufacturing groups and selected products. The 199 industries covered were among those featured in the U.S. Industrial Outlook published by the Department of Commerce's International Trade Administration (ITA) for many years. The 1994 edition of the U.S. Industrial Outlook was the last volume published in that series of publications.

The 92 tables combine industry and product shipments data from the 1992 Census of Manufactures and estimates for 1993 and 1994 by ITA's analysts. The estimates were prepared in the spring of 1995 prior to the release of 1993 Annual Survey of Manufactures results. The tables also contain employment, wages capital expenditures, import and export data.

The value of shipments shown in these tables are expressed both in "current" and "constant" dollars. Current dollars show the value of the goods produced in the particular year referred to. Constant dollars, or sometimes referred to as changes in real dollars, show the value of a year's output in the prices of a base year so you can accurately compare real changes in output levels over time. In these tables the base year was 1987. ITA uses the Producer Price Index (for more information, see text, section 15) from the Bureau of Labor Statistics at the product level to deflate the current dollar shipments.

The tables distinguish between industry and product shipments. Shipments data are collected separately for individual factories, or establishments, and not at the company level. Most factories make a variety of products. For statistical purposes, each is an establishment classified in the industry identified with its major product. For instance, the total output of a plant may consist of 80 percent tires and 20 percent hose and belting. In this case, the total output of the plant would be credited to the tire industry . The total output of all plants so classified would make up the "industry shipments" of the tire industry in this case. The value of all tires shipped by all establishments is aggregated to derive "product shipments."

Trade data shown in the tables were tabulated following the Bureau of the Census' trade concordance, as adjusted by the ITA's analyst, to approximate the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) industry grouping. The trade figures reflect final 1993 estimates and preliminary 1994 data. Exports are limited to domestic exports and are valued "free alongside ship" or f.a.s. Imports are restricted to goods imported for consumption and are on a customs value basis.
