Critical and Emerging Technologies by U.S. Businesses: Use and R&D Funding and Performance
Critical and emerging technologies (CETs) are “novel, advanced technologies with the potential to chart new pathways in American innovation and strengthen our national security.” The Annual Business Survey (ABS) 2022 (reference year 2021) included questions on 14 CETs. The ABS included questions on both the usage of CETs and the research and development performance within the area of each CET, and responses to these questions are included in this InfoBrief. This is the sixth year of the ABS, which was developed and is cosponsored by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the U.S. National Science Foundation and by the Census Bureau.

The detailed tables in this report present data from the 2023 Annual Business Survey (ABS) (data year 2022). The ABS is the primary source of data on research and development of for-profit, nonfarm businesses with one to nine employees operating in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The ABS also collects data on innovation, technology, intellectual property, research activities at nonprofit organizations, financing, management practice, company information, and business owner characteristics of business of all sizes. The 2023 ABS is the sixth year of the ABS. The survey is conducted annually by the Census Bureau for the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Microbusinesses Performed $5.7 billion of R&D in the United States in 2022
This InfoBrief presents research and development (R&D) data on microbusinesses (businesses with one to nine domestic employees). In 2022, microbusinesses reported a total of $7.6 billion in R&D costs, of which 88%, or $6.7 billion, was domestic and 75%, or $5.7 billion, was performed by the microbusinesses themselves. R&D costs include the amount that businesses spent of their own money and from other sources on R&D they perform, as well as the amount they paid others to perform R&D. Data are from the Annual Business Survey, developed and cosponsored by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the U.S. National Science Foundation and by the Census Bureau.

The tables in this report present data from the Business Enterprise Research and Development (BERD) Survey. The BERD Survey is the primary source of information on domestic and global research and development (R&D) expenditures and the R&D workforce for companies with 10 or more employees operating in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The survey is conducted annually by the Census Bureau in accordance with an interagency agreement with the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the U.S. National Science Foundation. These data are used by government agencies, corporations, research organizations, and academics to assess trends in the performance and funding of R&D.

Business R&D Performance in the United States Nears $700 Billion in 2022
Businesses continued to increase their research and development (R&D) performance in 2022, spending $692 billion on R&D in the United States, a 14.8% increase from 2021. Funding from the companies’ own sources accounted for $608 billion of this spending in 2022, a 15.2% increase from 2021. Funding from other sources accounted for $83 billion, an 11.8% increase from 2021. Data for this InfoBrief are from the 2022 Business Enterprise Research and Development Survey, developed and cosponsored by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the U.S. National Science Foundation and by the Census Bureau, which collected and tabulated data for the survey.
