Web statistics -- Measuring user activity

An analysis of Bureau of Justice Statistics website usage statistics

This report discusses the measures available from web server log file analysis and the analysis of the log files for the BJS web site during a four month period from August 24, 1997 to December 13, 1997. During the period studied, the BJS website experienced over 155,000 outside user sessions which averaged over 1,400 per day. Over 100,000 downloadable files were requested. Users were using every part of the site and were most interested in the topical or data related sections. The topics of most interest were violent crime, crime involving juveniles, and drugs and crime. Many users were coming into the site on pages other than the home page. The report also discusses how BJS is using this information to better serve its users. 5/98. NCJ 171118
